“July 1st 1916 was the first day of the battle of the Somme when the British army suffered 60,000 casualties in one day. Four and a half months later the campaign came to an incon clusive end. The stark Somme battlefields , cemeteries and memorials will forever bear wit ness to the huge loss of men, most of whom were volunteers.”
